Application for hardship cases

As the AStA wishes to support students facing financial difficulties,
the hardship grant scheme was introduced.
Examples of circumstances that may have led to financial difficulties:
  • Pregnancy
  • Bringing up a child / children on one’s own
  • Costs due to illness / medical expenses
  • Restrictions on work permits
  • Dismissal from work
  • A family member requiring care
  • […]
This list is merely an example and is not intended to be exhaustive.

What is a hardship application?

If you are experiencing financial hardship, you can complete the application form and submit it to us, along with the additional
required documents, by email only.
Applications are assessed on a case-by-case basis and, if approved, the cost
of the semester ticket – which forms part of the total semester fees – will be refunded.
This is a voluntary offer from the AStA, and there is no legal entitlement to it!

Deadline for submitting the hardship application:

Winter term: 1st of September to 31st of October
Summer term: 1st of March to 1st of May
Applications submitted outside these deadlines will not be accepted.
You will receive a response to your application within four weeks
of the deadline.

Important additional information:

  • Please ensure that you submit a complete application. If the application is
submitted to us incomplete, this may be grounds for rejection.
  • The better you can document your financial hardship (for example, by providing
a copy of your notice of termination, a bill for medical expenses, etc.), the easier it is for
    us to assess your application.
  • As this is a refund, you must have paid the semester fee
to Dortmund University of Applied Sciences and Arts before you can submit the application to us.
Regardless of the eligibility criteria, an application for hardship relief can only be granted once.
Information regarding supporting documents:
Please submit all supporting documents / required paperwork in a single PDF file.
You can easily find the necessary tool for this online, free of charge.

Download the application form here.

Note regarding the application:
The request for details of your income over the last six months is for verification purposes.
In other words, we need to be able to verify that you have been able to live comfortably on your income over the last six
months and that you now require assistance from the AStA due to a
difficult or exceptional situation.
